Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the transcultural stress factors experienced by Korean immigrant fathers as they go through childbirth with their wives in the United States socio-cultural context.

Methods: A focused ethnographic approach was used for this study using semi-structured interviews. A purposive sample of sixteen Korean immigrant fathers who gave birth in the United States within last six months of the interviews participated in this study. Data analysis was guided by Roper and Shapira¡¯s framework for ethnographic data analysis method with the help of NVIvo software.

Results: Five key themes were emerged as follows: Being a decision maker for the wife and baby, undertaking non-traditional gender roles, lack of information about health care resources, dealing with the wife¡¯s depressive symptoms, and feeling socially isolated.

Conclusion: This is the first cross-cultural study to explore Korean fathers¡¯ out-of-culture childbirth experiences within a foreign socio-cultural context, focusing on their perceived stress factors. The findings would help health care providers in obstetrical settings better understand Korean immigrant fathers¡¯ transcultural stress experiences. To provide more family-centered care and culturally sensitive perinatal to childbearing immigrant family, the fathers¡¯ difficulties and challenges based on different cultural belief system and gender roles should be also included as a part of perinatal education and care plan.
